World Book Day

10th March 25

We loved coming together as a school to celebrate World Book Day and take part in lots of different and exciting activities to celebrate the joy of reading.

Nursery and Kindergarten: enjoyed showing off their book day costumes in the whole school assembly, had fun at the Big Draw, talking about stories they had read this week, and made beautiful puffer fishes after the author visit with Katie Ford.

Reception: looked at ‘The Girl who Loved Dinosaurs’; the class read the story outside in the sunshine and then made their own courage masks, just like Pryia from the story.

Year 1: celebrated World Book Week by joining the whole school assembly, parading their costumes and then joining in with The Big Draw in the Pre-Prep. What a busy morning and so much fun sharing books and ideas with each other.

Year 2: focused on the wonderful Roald Dahl story of George’s Marvellous Medicine by creating perilous potions, they decorated their door and learnt onomatopoeia words, to describe the sloshing and fizzing and so much more! They finished off the week with The Big Draw, dressed in their book character costumes.

Year 3 and 4: participated in an online ‘booky and footy’ quiz where famous footballers and other reading role models describe their love of reading. They then completed reading rivers which included all of the books most important to them and explored all of the different ways that we read, whether it is timetables, newspapers or actual books. The girls enjoyed the author visit with Katie Ford in the afternoon while the boys were away on fixtures.

Years 5-8: enjoyed a carousel of activities by our fabulous specialist teachers. Dr Rolls introduced them to the world of chromatography and ink. Mr Beharrell taught children how to turn poetry into song and Mr Bailey and Miss Macneil challenged the children to a literary themed orienteering course. Mrs German created a giant tunnel book and Mr Eyers helped children to transform Charlotte’s Webb into a graphic novel.

At The Prep, we understand that reading is the bedrock of academic excellence. Studies consistently show that a rich reading culture enhances comprehension, vocabulary and overall academic attainment. Our approach – immersing children in the world of books through author visits, creative activities and discussion – ensures that our pupils develop not just strong literacy skills, but the confidence, critical thinking and analytical abilities that will serve them for life.

World Book Day has once again been a reminder of the magic that literature brings into our lives.
