Our School Nurse

Hello my name is Lisa Nix, and by now I am sure that most of you have seen me around the school in my uniform. I am a trained nurse and also a midwife.
1. I look after the children when they do not feel very well, or if they hurt themselves in the playground or during sport.
2. I make sure that all the children who are allergic to something are well looked after, and any children who might have an illness and still be in school, like diabetes or asthma.
3. I help to educate the staff on health issues that they may not be aware of.
4. I also make sure that anything topically to do with being healthy is available for the staff and children.
5. I also teach some of the classes about life skills and relationship issues.

Topics
Each term I will focus on a particular health related topic - last term we learnt about infectious diseases, and the importance of hygiene. Then we looked at diabetes.
This term we are looking at Life Skills which includes SRE (Sexual and Relationship Education) and also alcohol.
This term I have put up some information in the library on alcohol and how it affects our bodies. As you get older you will be in situations where you might be offered a drink, so knowing what you are doing is very important. ‘Having a drink’ as many of you will have heard your parents say is very much part of adult life and most of the time it is acceptable. However when we think about a healthy lifestyle this includes how much alcohol we drink because in large quantities it can cause harm to the body. It can cause memory problems in the brain, and affects behaviour making people do things they normally would not think about doing. It can also cause high blood pressure and lead to strokes. It can also make your vision blurred and things become difficult to see clearly.
For more information go to the library.
